FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The City Hall might have been billed as the "Last Night of the Proms" Finale. The people who attended along with me saw it as much more. Army, Navy and the Air Force were all represented. Most there because they were in, had a connection with or respected and supported the armed forces who try and make this world a better place.

The conductor of The Band of the 150 Regiment was well funny. With jokes thrown in about the names of pieces with long winded names. The flag baring was full of the pomp and pride you'd expect. And yes there was a minutes silence to remember those who gave their lives so that disabled people like my sons don't face death camps.

Yet there was also fun and laughter. Socialist Lesley Julian had us all singing the White Cliffs of Dover. The Do-Re-Me choir gave a memorable rendition of Let There be peace on Earth. There were Jazz and Beatles renditions thrown in. The TS Iron Duke Sea Cadet Corps performed some interesting routines. I also had the honour of enjoying the event with a member of a new history and culture club I have joined. Julian, who has seen active service, told me more about the work of the forces in Hull. And I chatted to a couple with military connections also. There's more detail in 2017 Hull's Special Year.

The Royal British Legion will be here long after City of Culture has finished. The heart of culture should be about upholding the best values of society

. This festival did not disappoint.
