1600 Bricks to be a lasting Legacy

October 26th

The week before last I headed down to Humber Street to see what the latest creative boost to the Fruit Market area might be. I wasn’t disappointed.

C4D1 was a showcase for 16,000 bricks, each one designed for a Hull child from a nursery setting under 5. There was everything on the bricks from stars to spaceships. Hull is built on clay and in the past food implements and vases have been modelled from the same material. The bricks were everywhere. Arranged on the floor like a maze, in the windows which overlooked Stage@TheDock the new open air theatre. A glass case which was a great showcase for the creative talents of the under 5’s as the designs stamped into the bricks could be viewed in and outside the gallery. I enjoyed the film on display showing the children getting messy and there were some actual children in the corner of the space taking part in act activities as it was half term.

The installation was dis-mantled on 4th November. Some parents chose to keep the brick for their child to remind them of their participation in City of Culture 2017. However there is to be a lasting legacy.

Wykeland are building in the area and and will incorporate what is left into the design of what is being built.
