26th September 2017 – January 2018

Every year the Turner Prize is awarded to any artist working and living in Britain. The contemporary art has to be judged from work submitted in the previous year. I had seen entrants in the London Tate gallery like Hirst. But every other year short listed artists are exhibited in galleries outside London. This year the panel will meet in Hull in December and decide the outcome from entrants now on display at the Feren’s. Like me you can come to Hull and view everything on offer for free.

Hurvin Anderson is an artist to look out for if the panel go for colour and skill.

What jumped out at me was the colour of Anderson’s paintings. Greensleaves, painted in oil and arcylic in 2017, depicts a tree painted as viewed from the studio where it was painted. The blues strike you. As did the couple wandering around viewing Anderson’s submissions. John and Carys Thomson-Osborne who had seen all of the finalist’s work and told me what they thought. They live near Pearson Park in Hull. Carys is a student. John was wearing an outfit very in keeping with the paintings. A turquoise blue top and distinctive white hat.

Carys liked Greensleaves best and also another piece which the couple both liked which personified pink and was basically two empty chairs inviting someone to sit in them. The leaves on the ground interested Carys.

Read more about their views later in further blogs and 2017 Hull’s Special Year.
